Dawn AC 13th User Group 21/22nd November 2005 - Great Success

Over 100 delegates attended this year's User Group meeting including Users from Australia, USA, Greece, and Ireland. The meeting was a great success which was made by the great talks given by the speakers.

Thank you to the speakers and delegates for making this meeting so successful.

Talk write ups and PowerPoint's will be available in the coming weeks.

Dawn AC Version 7 - Web Browser version - Impressive!!

On the first afternoon of the User Group, there was an extensive workshop  on the new web browser version of Dawn AC Version 7. The delegates were delighted and impressed by the new version. Many users felt that the audit trail feature alone justified getting the new version.

Version 7 was found to address all the requirements requested by the Users. It is aimed at providing a 'joined up' safe anticoagulation service across the district with all involved healthcare professionals being able to access the system as well as patients if required.

Dawn AC version is completely different from Version 6 and requires reinstallation, data migration and retraining. We also announced and discussed the costs of doing this work and costs for licensing the web technology utilised. Should you require more Version 7 details and costs please do not hesitate to contact me.

How Dawn AC handles 'Out of Range' INR's - Important Patient Check Warning

Dawn AC dosing engine plays a 'waiting game'. It does not change the dose every time the INR is out of range to prevent cycling and overshooting. It looks at the trend of up to the last five INR results and using statistics makes an assessment if a dose change is really necessary.

Such is the variation in INR, a good patient only manages to get about 55% of their INRs in in range. This means that the patient would be dose changed about 50% of the time causing dose change cycling. From the Benchmarking Service statistics we know the average dose change rate is only about 30%.

It is important that you check with patient every time there an 'out of range' INR to ensure that no dose change is the correct decision. Dawn AC issues a warning message to check with the patient why there is a low or high INR every time this occurs. Remember Dawn AC is only an aid and the healthcare professional remains in charge!

It is also important to check that test interval set by the computer is appropriate for this patient with low or high INR.
