On checking the dose instruction settings in Dawn AC there was one dose instruction in error. It had been there for several years!User modifiable software is where a user is able to configure defaults such as dose instruction formats, dose change and test interval settings, reports and alarm levels.Dawn AC Enterprise version allows these types of changes and so creates a powerful capability in that the software can be readily configured to meet local needs, but it also creates a situation where if an error or oversight is made in a setting by a user it could have serious safety considerations.Throughout Dawn AC suitable warnings remind the User of their responsibilities to validate any changes they make to the software settings to ensure that Dawn AC is working correctly and safely. Also with any data manipulation we are requested to make by a customer we also warn the customer that they must be responsible for validating that the data is correct. Safe operation of Dawn AC depends on competent healthcare professional intervention in all aspects of using the product. This means for example thoroughly checking that each dose instruction produced by the software is appropriate for the patient and also ensuring that any configuration settings altered are correct. The essence of benchmarking is moving from where you are to where you want to be. A benchmark is a point of reference; these points of reference, or standards, can take many forms. They are measured by questions about the service e.g. how many, how much time, how much money, how reliable? By studying other organisations and comparing the performance, you will be able to measure your performance against that of others and identify areas for improvement. 12th Annual User Group – 22nd - 23rd November 2004Here is the Provisional timed programme for the User Group meeting Monday 22nd NovemberChair – Dr David Wright14:00 - 14:30: "NPSA and Safe Medication Practice" Prof. David Cousins, National Patient Safety Agency, UK
