Tomatoes 'can cut risk of DVT'

Is warfarin under threat! EATING six tomatoes or drinking a quarter of a pint of their juice every day can prevent airline killer deep vein thrombosis, Scottish scientists have proved.

Experts from Aberdeen's Rowett Institute have confirmed a long-held theory that the fruit can prevent the blood clots that cause the potentially fatal condition.

More than 40 British passengers have died from DVT, caused by spending too long sitting down.

Warfarin still successful for stroke prevention

Results of a randomized trial comparing anticoagulation therapy with a combination of two antiplatelet agents, aspirin and clopidogrel, shows that warfarin remains the superior choice for preventing vascular events such as stroke and systemic embolus in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).

Although Warfarin has proven highly effective in preventing stroke in patients with AF, it is a difficult drug for patients to maintain in a therapeutic range. Dr Connolly pointed out “its estimated that the average patient on anticoagulation is not in the therapeutic range more than about half the time… there’s a need for better-tolerated easier-to-use, effective antithrombotic agents…two antiplatelet drugs might provide that”`

However for those who were already on anticoagulant, the risk was much higher of major haemorrhage on clopidogrel and aspirin than if they were continued on anticoagulation.”
