Anticoagulation Software 15th User Group 2007 |

Invites
to this years User Group and write up's of last year's
meeting were sent out in the post towards the end of last
week. Accompanying the invite is a booking form. Please do
not hesitate in returning these back to us as we are
expecting a large turn out this year following the success
of the User Group in 2006.
If you have
not received your invite within the next few days please
contact us
and we will ensure another one is sent straight out to you.
The User Group, as many of
you know, offers the chance for Health Care Professionals
to share ideas and learn alternative methods of best
practice within Anticoagulation therapy. As well as the
day being informative and beneficial, we try to make the
event enjoyable by providing an evening meal
and entertainment within the package price.

North American
User Group |
|
Plans for the event are well
underway. The North American User Group is going to be
held on the 12th October in Denver, the day before the
South West Symposium on Thrombosis and Hemostasis, also
being held in Denver, making this, potentially, a very
informative and worthwhile trip.
We are, however, in need of
speakers to contribute to the success of the day. If
anyone would be interested in giving a short presentation,
rather like what is mentioned above, then again we would
be keen to hear from you.

Ancillary Products of Interest |
|
Imagine you could speed up
the production and despatching of letters by not having
to manually fold and insert each one. The staff time
saved can be re-allocated to more productive work.
Econo-Mailer Ltd markets a
stationery system, called pressure seal, for improving
the methods of getting computer-produced letters out of
the path lab and into the post. It interfaces with Dawn
AC.
Please contact us if you
would like us to demonstrate the forms/machine in your
office so that you and your colleagues can see the
benefits for yourselves. The stationery is individually
designed for you by our team of experts so that they
fulfil exactly the purpose for which you need them.
Econo-Mailer also has a
new product called digital pen and paper. This is
a technology that transfers hand-written documents
into a computer system. This may be particularly
beneficial to health care professionals out in the
community who don't always have access to a PC. If
you feel this system might be of interest and would be
interested in developing an application with us please
contact us.

New Device
Could Replace Blood-Thinning Meds for AF Patients |
|
|
Doctors at Massachusetts
General Hospital are testing a new device that may
stop strokes and replace the need for people to take
blood-thinning medication.
The
Watchman is permanently implanted into the heart
through a catheter. Tiny hooks hold it into place,
sealing off the section of the heart where clots build
up.
Its acts as a filter and
any clots that occur on the other end of the
device can't travel through the filter into the rest
of the body and cause a stroke.
About 400 people
nationwide have had the Watchman permanently implanted
and 97 percent of them are now off Coumadin/Warfarin.
Researchers said there have been no side effects.
We can do this safely,
effectively, and the people who receive this device
can stop Coumadin and are not having strokes.

Three Months of
Anticoagulation Therapy as Beneficial as Six Months |
|
Three
months of oral anticoagulant therapy after an episode of
venous thromboembolism (VTE) is as effective and well
tolerated as 6 months of treatment, results of a
randomized trial suggest.
None
of the subjects had a thrombophilic defect, neoplasia,
permanent immobility, or
any
other persistent risk factor for VTE, patients were
randomly allocated to take warfarin for 3 or 6 months.
The results, which appear in the British Medical
Journal, indicated that there was no significant
difference between the groups with respect to adverse
outcomes resulting from VTE or its treatment.
However, 2% of the patients who received 6 months of
anticoagulation suffered a major nonfatal haemorrhage
versus none of those treated for 3 months.
In terms of efficacy, 3 months' anticoagulation was
associated with much the same benefit as 6 months'
anticoagulant treatment but the shorter regimen seems to
be associated with a lower incidence of haemorrhage during
treatment.
