Risk of Harm to Patients: Comparison with Computer Aided Practice with Sole Medical Practitioner Practice.

Assuming a patient is tested 12 times a year, the risk of harm to the patient from a sole medical practitioner dose recommendation error is estimated to be one event every seven years. With a computer aided medical practitioner the risk of harm is reduced to one event every 20 years because of the warnings and alerts issued by the computer software e.g. “last dose change failed”.

In addition, if some form of independent checking of the dose instruction occurs with a computer-aided mode of working, the risk of harm to the patient is substantially reduced to one event every 7000 years.

We recommend that all dose instructions produced by Dawn AC should be checked by a competent healthcare professional before instructing a patient. For more information on the background to the above figures, please see the “Impact of Human Error Report” Download at http://www.4s-dawn.com/dawnac under Latest News.
