Welcome to the November edition of the
DAWN AC
Anticoagulation Software E-Newsletter for 2009.

Here is how the With/Without option
works on DAWN list views:
The With/Without option appears to the left of your drop
down list of custom filters and is set to “With” by default.
For example, if you have the “Scheduled Tests” filter selected
on your Work List or Attendance list view the filter will read
“With“ “Scheduled Tests”. If you change the With/Without
option to “Without” the filter will now read “Without”
“Scheduled Tests” and display all records with a status other
than “Scheduled”, for example, “Authorised” records or records
with an INR and provisional dose.
Changing “With” to “Without” reverses the filter selected
to its right (“Scheduled Tests” in this example). It does not
reverse all the other criteria selected on the page such as
date, clinic or target range. In other words selecting
“Without” “Authorised Doses” and setting the date filter to
“Today” finds all patients with treatment records for today
that have not been authorised. It does not find everybody
with an authorised test on a date other than today.
Our preliminary enquiries show that few people use the
“Without” option, so to avoid potential confusion we are
proposing to remove this option in a future release.
Please reply to this email if you do use the “Without” option.

Study Shows Voice
Response System May Improve Patient Care |
|
A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal
has found that using an interactive voice response system may
potentially improve the monitoring of anticoagulation
patients.
The study, conducted at the Ottawa Hospital, looked at 226
patients over a period of a few months who had been on therapy
for 3 months or more. 77.8% of all dosage instruction messages
were given via the CallAssureCDM voice response system. It was
found that the anticoagulation control was similar when
compared to periods when the patients were not given
information in this way, and the system reduced staff
workload, giving a reduction of 33% of the time usually taken
to personally call the patients.
Once the study was completed, 76.6% of patients then opted to
continue with the voice response system. More studies are
required at this point to conclusively demonstrate the
voice response systems effectiveness.

We currently have several sites who use the CallAssureCDM
voice response system in conjunction with DAWN AC. To find out

Statins May Cut Chance of Fatal Blood Clots |
|
A study presented at the annual conference of the American
College of Physicians recently has found that the use of
statins can reduce the risk of developing a clot in the lung
or leg in high risk patients by two thirds.
The study looked at 593 patients suffering from
atherosclerosis, 73% of whom were taking statins. It was found
that patients not taking statins were three times more likely
to develop a clot. It was also found that patients taking
high-strength statins were at a lower risk than those on a
normal strength.

Smoking and Obesity Increases Risk of Thromboembolisms |
|

Researchers from the Copenhagen City Heart Study have found
that smoking and a high BMI (body mass index) are major risk
factors in patients who develop a venous thromboembolic event.
The researchers reviewed data from 18,954 patients and found
that out of the 992 venous thrombotic events that were
recorded, patients who smoked were at a higher risk, with the
amount that the patient smoked relating to the risk level.
Being overweight also increased the risk, with the body weight
amount related to the risk level.
Dr. Holst, MD at the University Hospital Rigshospitalet in
Copenhagen, commented, "We did not calculate whether being
overweight and smoking increased the individual risk or was
synergistic and increased risk greater. I think that is going
to be my next project with this data -- to see how having more
than one of the risk factors impacts venous thromboses."

The tracking of appointments is easily handled by the DAWN
Reminders and Lists views to ensure follow-up.
The DAWN trends and alerting engine scans all results
for trends and abnormal results.
If you are interested in this module or know of anyone
who is then please reply to this email.
