Welcome to the May edition of
the
DAWN AC Anticoagulation Software E-Newsletter for 2008.

We will shortly be sending out a
Dawn AC survey to all of our existing customers to find out more
about the likes and dislikes with the products, support service,
etc. This feedback will enable us to look at how we can improve
these areas further.
We would be really grateful if you could take the time to complete
the survey when it arrives. It should only take around 5 minutes to
complete.

North American User Group |
|
The North American User Group is
going to be held on the 10th October in Albuquerque, the day
before the South West Symposium on Thrombosis and Hemostasis,
also being held in Albuquerque, making this, potentially, a
very
informative and worthwhile trip.
We are, however, in need of
speakers to contribute to the success of the day. If anyone
would be interested in giving a short presentation, rather
like what is mentioned above, then again we would be keen to
hear from you.
Thank you to everyone who kindly
offered to help organise this years meeting. As the
meeting this year is to be held in Albuquerque to gain the
benefit of two meetings in one trip, the following people from
around this area are organising the event:
- Rudy Pena, ABQ Health
Partners, Albuquerque
- Dan Witt, Kaiser Permanente, Colorado Region
- Angela Aldrich, Presbyterian
Hospital, Albuquerque

Backing up Your Data - Are you
Backing Up Regularly? |
|

As most of you know, backing up your patient data is essential
to protect it in the event of a system crash, power cut, etc
where data can be lost. But do you know how often your data is
being backed up, if at all?
For Dawn AC version 7 users, backups can be scheduled to run
automatically so that this is taken care of for you. However,
you should periodically check that scheduled backups are still
running and have not stopped if maintenance work or updates have
been performed on the server.
If you would like any advice on how to set this up, or need any
assistance with backing up data on any version of Dawn AC, then
please contact us at
support@4s-dawn.com or call us on 015395 63091 and we will
be more than happy to help you.

Research Shows Aspirin Works
Well after Heart Procedure |
|
According to research released from the Intermountain Medical
Center recently, some patients do not need to be given warfarin
after a heart ablation procedure, as they benefit just as much
from aspirin, with less associated risks.
The study, which looked at 540 patients who were not at high risk
of a stroke, found that they were just as protected taking an
aspirin a day. The study excluded those patients who were at high
risk of a stroke.
Dr. John D. Day, MD of IMC's Heart Rhythm Sevices commented, "It's
good news, because warfarin has a 1 percent chance each year
you're on it of a life-threatening bleed - either a hemorrhagic
stroke or elsewhere in the body".

Man's Heart Rhythm Restored by a Taser Shock?
|
|

Three doctors at Hartford Hospital, Connecticut, have reported
an instance of a man with an irregular heartbeat being
restored to normal possibly as a result of a shock with a
Taser gun.
The finding, which is to be published in the
Annals of Emergency Medicine,
may provide some evidence that a shock of this kind could
possibly restore an irregular heart rhythm.
The Taser gun is able to deliver an electric shock of up to
50,000 volts, and while some cases have been reported which
indicate a possible link between a taser shock and an
irregular heartbeat, this appears to be the first instance of
a heartbeat being restored to normal.
The cardiologist who attended to the man, Dr. Kyle Richards,
commented, "People can spontaneously go from atrial
fibrillation into a normal rhythm without any intervention at
all. You cannot conclusively say that the Taser did it. It's
just one more thing that says, hey, Tasers can actually affect
the heart".
