The Importance of Backing Up Your Data

As most of you know, backing up your patient data is essential to protect it in the event of a system crash, power cut, etc where data can be lost. But do you know how often your data is being backed up, if at all?

For DAWN AC version 7 users, backups can be scheduled to run automatically so that this is taken care of for you. However, you should periodically check that scheduled backups are still running and have not stopped if maintenance work or updates have been performed on the server. Regularly checking that the backups are being carried out will prevent certain DAWN files from becoming too large and affecting the speed performance of the system.

For users running DAWN AC version 7.6 or later, we can now use the front tally screen to display the last backup date, as well as the size of the database and log file. If you are interested in having this displayed within your DAWN system, please contact us at support@4s-dawn.com.

For DAWN AC version 6 users, it is very important to take regular snapshots, and if possible, to ask your IT department to backup the snapshot folder within the main DAWN AC folder. This gives another form of backup that we can use if the server backups taken by your IT department fail for whatever reason.

Running DAWN AC version 6 using a virtualised server has not been tested by us. Some customers have done this, and at one site there is a suspicion that the virtualisation of the server might have caused a database corruption.

If you would like any advice on setting backups up, or need any assistance with backing up data on any version of DAWN AC, then please contact us at support@4s-dawn.com and we will be more than happy to help you.

DAWN Technical Bulletin - Did you Read It?

If you are a DAWN AC version 7 user, you should have received a technical bulletin email recently outlining some DAWN issues and information. If you have not already read this email, please take the time to have a look at this.

If you have not received the email or would like it re-sending, then please reply to this newsletter.

 Atrial Fibrillation Gene Discovery

A team of scientists from the Icelandic Heart Association along with scientists from the USA and Europe have discovered nine gene areas which are involved with giving the electrical pulses to contract the heart.

It is hoped that the results of this study may make it possible in future to predict an irregular heart beat and possibly develop a preventative medicine. The findings have now been published in the journal Nature Genetics.
